What is Test and Balance?

There are 4 major aspects of a properly performed Test and Balance:

  • Design Review
  • Installation Verification
  • Test and Balance
  • Report

Design Review

As a third party review, IET will review the mechanical plans and specifications. In this review, we are looking for any possible design deficiencies that would prevent the HVAC systems from effectively operating in accordance with the sequence of operation specified or prevent an effective and accurate Test & Balance.

Installation Verification

Installation verification is the process of inspecting the installation of all HVAC equipment for conformance with design intent.  This service is to be done after air distribution equipment is on site and ductwork installation has begun, yet well in advance of the Start-Up and the Test and Balance phase. The purpose of the inspection is to identify and report deviations from design and ensure that systems will be ready for Test & Balance. This may also include submittal conformance.

Test and Balance

Test and Balance is a methodical process of field testing, measuring, adjusting, balancing and recording the performance of each device of the HVAC system until the systems perform within the intended design criteria.

Report

The Test and Balance Report is a complete record of design, preliminary and final test data.  Report forms include numerous equipment test sheets that all communicate pertinent data required by NEBB.  The sum of all the reports aid in understanding how the building is operating and they will also serve as a valuable tool to assist the maintenance department over the life of the building.

When Test and Balance is properly performed in its entirety, a building's owner will enjoy many benefits to this comprehensive Test and Balance approach.  Some of these benefits include:

  • Reduced Energy Consumption
  • Optimal Equipment Performance
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality
  • Improved Occupant Comfort
  • Increased Employee Productivity
  • Minimal Indoor Humidity Levels
  • Reduced Equipment Failure Rates
  • Reduced Maintenance Costs
